All the PGN’s (messages) from SRC (source) 13 on the screen above are coming from the EMU-1 and the right-hand window is a breakdown of the “Engine Parameters, Dynamic” PGN 127489. On Gizmo there are umteen ways to display N2K info, but for the real nitty-gritty there’s nothing like Actisense’s NMEA Reader (or Maretron’s N2KAnalyzer). I also had to fiddle with RPM ratio until it matched (what I’ve always considered) tachometer reality, and that was it… I look forward to getting the temp numbers right as the Config Tool evolves, but in truth, the number I’m getting is quite usable because it’s consistent. The exception is coolant temperature, which is reading about 15° high (I have a Maretron temp sensor on the block, which confirms the analog gauge). There’s not much custom calibration possible until Actisense adds it (planned) but in most cases the digital signals seem to match my analog gauge readings pretty well. The Tool is pretty straightforward drop-down menus let you specify which signal is attached to which terminal and then select possible gauge calibration profiles. (It’s necessary to have an Actisense NGT-1 Gateway between the boat’s N2K network and whatever PC you use, but there are numerous other good uses for the gateway, like feeding boat info to a compatible charting or instrument program.) Then came the exciting moment when I fired up both the Volvo Penta (whose ignition now also activates the EMU-1) and the EMU Config Tool software above. Removing the panel made the job easier, and I also used 3M Scotchlok IDC tap connectors that will eventually get their own Panbo entry. The most tedious part of the install was attaching all those skinny alarm, gauge, and tach signal wires seen on the EMU-1 terminals (top photo) to the appropriate wires on the back of the old gauge panel. This is a semi-redundancy I like! (The three trouble lights and their associated audio alarms are a different deal, which I’ll explain further down.) If the old coolant temperature gauge (upper left) fails, for instance, the EMU will still deliver the temp information if the sender is working, at least theoretically…and if the EMU or N2K network fail, the gauge will still work. Incidentally, one neat nuance of the EMU-1 is that each of its 6 gauge channels can automatically sense the presence of an analog sibling, adjusting its calibration curve to suit and also sending power to the sender if needed. I’m too conservative to totally remove Gizmo’s old gauges (like the set above at the lower helm), but I’m already confident enough of the EMU-1 data that I plan to move them to an obscure location when I do a “glass bridge” makeover this winter. I’m going to be better informed about my engine’s health, which is very important, while also gaining some scarce helm panel real estate for better uses than dumb analog gauges… That Actisense EMU-1 is now converting the analog gauge data from the boat’s 14-year-old Volvo Penta diesel into NMEA 2000 messages that can be displayed in multiple ways on most any MFD or instrument screen on board and can also be custom alarmed and logged. It’s great to test an unusual device that promises to do something new and desirable for the good vessel Gizmo and find out that it installs fairly easily and works quite well. For the Cray-3, he decided to set an even higher performance improvement goal, an increase of 12x over the Cray-2. Although the machines did not always meet this goal, this was a useful technique in defining the project and clarifying what sort of process improvements would be needed to meet it. Cray generally set himself the goal of producing new machines with ten times the performance of the previous models. Seymour Cray began the design of the Cray-3 in 1985, as soon as the Cray-2 reached production. The Cray-3 was Cray's last completed design with CCC's bankruptcy, he formed SRC Computers to concentrate on parallel designs, but died in a car accident in 1996 before this work was delivered. With the delivery of the first Cray-3, Seymour Cray immediately moved on to the similar-but-improved Cray-4 design, but the company went bankrupt before it was completely tested. The company went bankrupt in May 1995, and the machine was officially decommissioned. The first machine was finally ready in 1993, but with no launch customer, it was instead loaned as a demonstration unit to the nearby National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder. The launch customer, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, cancelled their order in 1991 and a number of company executives left shortly thereafter. In 1989 the Cray-3 effort was spun off to a newly formed company, Cray Computer Corporation (CCC). Shortly thereafter, the corporate headquarters in Minneapolis decided to end work on the Cray-3 in favor of another design, the Cray C90. To focus the teams, the Cray-3 effort was moved to a new lab in Colorado Springs, Colorado later that year. Other teams at the lab were working on designs with similar performance. Work started on the Cray-3 in 1988 at Cray Research's (CRI) development labs in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. The design goal was performance around 16 GFLOPS, about 12 times that of the Cray-2. The system was one of the first major applications of gallium arsenide (GaAs) semiconductors in computing, using hundreds of custom built ICs packed into a 1 cubic foot (0.028 m 3) CPU. The Cray-3 was a vector supercomputer, Seymour Cray's designated successor to the Cray-2. The CPU occupies only the top of the tank, the rest contains memory and power supplies. Seymour Cray poses behind a Cray-3 processor tank. Here's a simplified, non-detailed list of the 38 UTC time offsets and the corresponding countries: Take a look at all time zones around the world. In other words, the time zone map indicates positive or negative offsets from UTC, using the codes UTC- or UTC+ and the corresponding number of hours and minutes.įor instance, at UTC☐0, you'll find the United Kingdom at UTC+14:00, you'll get Kiribati's Line Islands. Solar time is the formula used to set civil time via UTC.Ī time offset is the amount of time added to or subtracted from UTC. There are two ways of establishing time on planet Earth - the atomic clock and solar time.Ītomics clocks are complex timekeeping mechanisms run by national governmental agencies and used on specific occasions, technologies, and systems. That is why countries located immediately west of the IDL - Tonga, Samoa, and Kiribati - are the first to celebrate the New Year. IDL is another imaginary line that passes through the middle of the Pacific Ocean and determines where you cross from one day to the next. Nevertheless, many people still use GMT as the time standard for all countries worldwide - for example, GMT+12:00 for New Zealand.īut there's also another important formalism - the International Date Line (IDL). UTC is precisely the same imaginary line defined by GMT at the Prime Meridian, located in the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. It replaced the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in the late 1960s, even though GMT remains today as a regional time zone at UTC+00:00. The official time standard regulating the world's time and clocks is called Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The Differences Between GMT, UTC, and IDL Take a look at the official world time zone map. So, we all end up getting 24 standard time zones and 14 additional exceptions.Īs a result, local time always depends on what time zone you're in at a given moment.Īs stated above, all nations have specific interests, so the time zone map is not linear as it should be in theory. With the rotation of the Earth, from east to west, each meridian represents one given hour. They're technically named meridians, i.e., imaginary lines that run vertically from the North Pole to the South Pole, each 15 degrees apart. However, in a world with borders, political, geographical, social interests, and lobbies, the officially established time zones make the planet look like a complicated geometrical drawing of longitudinal lines. Ideally, the planet would be divided between 24 identical time zones, each representing one hour of the day. When you fly between Los Angeles and New York, you must add three hours to your clock upon arriving at your destination.Īnd while someone is waking and getting ready for another working day under sunny skies, another is heading off to bed under the moonlight. As a result, time is always different in various places on the planet. Welcome to the complex world of time zones. What time is it? Here's how a common daily question can have multiple answers. |
